Upcoming: Bicycle Safety Event at REI Bloomington (MN)

I will be co-presenting a free seminar on bicycle safety at the REI in Bloomington on March 25, starting at 7:00PM. The title is “Bicycle Safety is a Two-Way Street,” and fellow Minnesota LCI Lisa Austin and I will be covering Minnesota bicycle laws, principles of driving your bicycle in traffic, and other road-sharing concepts for cyclists.

The REI website has pre-registration, but it’s not required. It’s a-okay to just show up. And, as I said: It’s free. I think there will be snacks too, if that’s a motivator.

Group Riding Skills Seminar – May 8, 2010

On behalf of the Twin Cities Bicycling Club, I will be teaching the League of American Bicyclists Group Riding Skills curriculum in Saint Paul the morning of May 8.

This event is free to TCBC members. If space permits, non-members may be able to attend as well. If you are either a TCBC member, or an interested non-member, course information is online at Eventbrite. Non-members can contact me for information and space availability.

I also do custom programs for other organizations, groups, events and ride marshalls, etc. etc. Contact me for info on that if you’re interested in such a program.

Winter is a good time to clean out the buckets of bike stuff and attend… swap meets!

Twin Cities Bike Swap Meet – February 14, at the National Sports Center. $5 admission to a really giant event. Tables $40 to sell.
TCBC Swap Meet – March 27, at the Hopkins VFW. Free entry, free to sell for TCBC members and sponsors.

I’m sure there are others upcoming, although few have the widespread allure that a Valentine’s Day swap meet in Blaine offers. Stop by the swap meet, then go to White Castle for dinner!

This is the map for tonight’s group ride that I am leading.

It’s a slightly revised version of my Great Googly Moogly route, as featured in the Minnesota Bike Atlas. In this case, we dodge the havoc that is the Como Avenue destruction. Rest stop is Dairy Queen.

Two quick notes:

Registration for the League of American Bicyclists’ National Rally, which is being held in conjunction with TCBC’s Weekend on Wheels, is now open: WOW2009 Registration
The aforementioned event is to include a League Traffic Skills 101 course in Winona, Minnesota, on Friday, July 31, 2009.

The TS101 course will be listed on the League web site shortly as well, although all registration will go via the above link.

Weekend on Wheels 2009

The Twin Cities Bicycling Club has announced the 2009 Weekend on Wheels event. This year’s event will again be in Winona, Minnesota, and is scheduled for July 31, August 1 and August 2, 2009.

One special thing about this year’s event is that it will be the partner for the League of American Bicyclists National Rally of Bicyclists. TCBC and Winona will welcome bikers from across the country for the weekend’s festivities!

The weekend will feature riding, eating, and educational opportunities, including a session of the LAB’s Traffic Skills 101 course (formerly known as Road I).

TCBC Weekend on Wheels 2008 Registration Now Available

The registration form is now available, for thems as likes planning ahead. Pre-registration – which is the only way to get lodging and Saturday dinner – is due by July 23. That’s only 108 days away!

Spend 3 days in Winona riding premier cycling routes, and partaking in a Saturday night lakeside luau that is sure to be delicious.

It’s Never Too Early: WOW2008

Planning is underway for the Twin Cities Bicycling Club’s Weekend on Wheels 2008.

The early stats are that it will take place August 1-3, in Winona, Minnesota. The club last went to Winona in 2001 and 2002, and many members have fond memories of the city near the bluffs.

Details will be in the May newsletter, and on display at the TCBC booth at the Ironman bicycle ride on April 27. In the meantime, we do need some volunteers to help with logistics. All positions will allow people to ride, and are pretty easy gigs involving things like some pre-event work, and some on-site procurement (registration coffee!). Descriptions of the available positions and the ability to sign up are posted at http://www.rideboldly.org/weekend-on-wheels-2008/.

Minnesota Bike Atlas, 7th Edition – Available Soon!

I received my advance copy of the Minnesota Bike Atlas, 7th Edition the other day. (Disclosure: one of my maps is in it.) It’s a very nice book whose proceeds help support the work of Hostelling International – Minnesota and the Twin Cities Bicycle Club, and has lots of easy-to-use maps in it. New this year is a CD of the routes.

HI-MN will be distributing it via local book shops shortly, and it’ll also be available at the Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride on April 27. Note for those who have not done the ride previously that this is not an Ironman like a triathlon – it’s Ironman like ‘are you ready for a long freakin’ ride at the end of April when the weather could be agony or ecstasy?’ Last year’s weather was perfect, although it was the first time in 10 years I didn’t attend – I had gotten married the day before and wearing heels on grassy lawns all day did a real number on my calves. We can only hope for such weather this year, although once again I shan’t be riding, only volunteering.

Sunday 10/7 Ride: Candy Apple Gray

Hugh will be leading this little jaunt, but I am posting the map and queue for people’s delight. The ride visits Aamodt’s Apple Orchard, known for their apple pie and apple cider brats.

Ride is about 35 miles, and has some lovely rolling hills. The rest stop is late in the ride, but there are some chances at biffies and water prior to the orchard as needed. Several of the country roads do not have much shoulder, but are not especially busy. Riding single-file is suggested on such roads.

7 SUN 1:30 PM B 32-38 mi. CANDY APPLE GRAY. Depart from Ramsey Beach, on Hwy 96 just east of Highway 61, White Bear Lake. Same start location, different route, different orchard. Explore some rolling hills on route to an apple bakery for apple pie, cookies, and turnovers. Faster riders welcomed so long as they leave some apple treats for the leader.
