Open Streets Events in Minneapolis

31st & Lyndale, Minneapolis MNThe Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition is working to bring Open Streets event to Minneapolis this summer, and are looking for volunteers to help with some of the work involved.

Open Streets events typically close down a street for several hours, often on a Sunday, for community activities – running, walking and cycling, plus programmed activities including yoga, dance lessons, aerobics, games, and even musical performances, bike repair and bike safety classes.

To get route approval for an Open Streets event, MBC need to document approval from adjacent businesses and residences. Currently, they need volunteers for “door-knock outings” preliminary to securing a permit for a June 12 event on Lyndale Avenue. The scheduled volunteer opportunities are as follows:

  • 2/19 (10am-1pm) – Notify neighbors along the route of the plan via a letter drop. Meet at 10am.
  • 2/26 (9am-12pm) – Collection of approval signatures via a door-knock outing. Meet at 9am.
  • 3/3 (6pm-9pm) – Follow-up door-knock outing to fill in approval signature gaps Meet at 6pm.

All volunteer outings will meet at at CRC Coffee Bar (3346 Lyndale Avenue South). MBC seek RSVPs at openstreets-at-mplsbike.org. These opportunities also show up on our Minnesota Bicycle Event Calendar!
