Open Streets Events in Minneapolis

0saves

31st & Lyndale, Minneapolis MNThe Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition is working to bring Open Streets event to Minneapolis this summer, and are looking for volunteers to help with some of the work involved.

Open Streets events typically close down a street for several hours, often on a Sunday, for community activities – running, walking and cycling, plus programmed activities including yoga, dance lessons, aerobics, games, and even musical performances, bike repair and bike safety classes.

To get route approval for an Open Streets event, MBC need to document approval from adjacent businesses and residences. Currently, they need volunteers for “door-knock outings” preliminary to securing a permit for a June 12 event on Lyndale Avenue. The scheduled volunteer opportunities are as follows:

  • 2/19 (10am-1pm) – Notify neighbors along the route of the plan via a letter drop. Meet at 10am.
  • 2/26 (9am-12pm) – Collection of approval signatures via a door-knock outing. Meet at 9am.
  • 3/3 (6pm-9pm) – Follow-up door-knock outing to fill in approval signature gaps Meet at 6pm.

All volunteer outings will meet at at CRC Coffee Bar (3346 Lyndale Avenue South). MBC seek RSVPs at openstreets-at-mplsbike.org. These opportunities also show up on our Minnesota Bicycle Event Calendar!

NHTSA Study: Hybrid Cars More Hazardous to Cyclists & Pedestrians

0saves

Quite a bit has been said about hybrid vehicles, particularly about the reduced sound output of their engines. Now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) weighs in with a report that suggests the incidence of collisions between hybrid vehicles and cyclists/pedestrians is higher than that between internal combustion engine vehicles and cyclists/pedestrians.

The study is available as a PDF.

A few findings from the study:

  • Pedestrian and bicyclist crashes involving vehicles commonly occurred on roadways, in zones with low speed limits, during daytime and in clear weather.
  • Crashes are more likely to occur between hybrids and bicycles vs. combustion engines and bicycles in situations where the car is slowing or stopping, backing up, or entering or leaving a parking space.
  • Bicyclist crashes involving hybrid vehicles at intersections or interchanges were significantly higher when compared to vehicles with internal combustion engines.
  • The sample size was fairly limited, but large enough to create a statistically significant sample.

Some hybrid and electric vehicles are trying to bridge the gap by creating artificial sound generators for the engines to make them sound a bit more like traditional combustion engines — although generally with lower volume. And there’s no denying that the reduced output of hybrid/electric vehicles is far nicer to perch behind at a stop or a light.

The study definitely re-emphasizes the importance of using your ears on the road to increase your safety factors — but to reinforce with visual cues as much as possible. Drivers of any vehicle also need to display caution when parking, pulling out, stopping, or accelerating.

Summary of 2009 Bicycle Fatalities

Normally, I would read through this report and try to summarize it myself, but frankly, this summary rocks my socks so hard I have decided not to bother and just direct everyone to it instead. I shall have a refreshing beverage.

Minnesota had 10 pedalcyclist fatalities in 2009, making it a very middle-of-the-road state for fatalities. Top states for fatalities tended to be in the Sunbelt.

Pre-Ride Safety Checks for High-End Bicycles

The League of American Bicyclists preaches the ABC QuickCheck via Traffic Skills 101 and other bicycle ed programs. It’s a great check-through that applies to nearly every kind of bicycle on the market.

Bicycling magazine has a series of maintenance videos, and created a video of a pre-ride safety check I found interesting. It’s a little more thorough, and it’s being executed against a fairly high-end bike. Some of the issues to check for end up being different on high-end bikes, thanks to issues like the fancy wheels, frame materials, etc.

Check it out:

Transportation Cuts This Week?

Transportation Nation and the League of American Bicyclists are reporting that this week may be critical for budgeted 2011 investments in transportation and infrastructure. House Republicans want to cut nearly $15.5 billion from the section of the budget carrying transportation and housing funding. The cuts impact highway projects, infrastructure investments, and particularly high-speed rail.

build your budgetThis is expected to be the first round of an ongoing battle over infrastructure investment.

The bulk of this first round is expected to come from high speed rail, but there are significant cuts planned to surface transportation and infrastructure as well. Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader, has said “When you say they want to cut transportation, we know right away that’s a false economy.”

The League of American Cyclists say, “If an amendment attacking biking and walking is proposed we will let you know right away and ask that you do your part as a citizen to raise your or biking and walking.”

The cuts are expected to be proposed Tuesday. More details will come as the situation develops.
